The Government's 10 year Teenage Pregnancy Strategy represents the first coordinated attempt to tackle both the causes and the consequences of teenage pregnancy. The strategy's targets are:
- To halve the under-18 conception rate by 2010, and establish a firm downward trend in the under-16 rate
- Increase the proportion of teenage parents in education, training or employment to 60% by 2010, to reduce their risk of long-term social exclusion
All areas have a 10-year strategy in place, with local under-18 conception rate reduction targets of between 40 and 60%. These local targets underpin the national 50% reduction target. Coventry's target is 55%.
The Respect Yourself Programme (a multi-agency partnership) has the responsibility to take forward the Respect Yourself Strategy and Action Plan in the city.
Respect Yourself Vision
The strategy aims to support young people through their physical, emotional and moral development, with the skills and information and opportunities to make informed choices and decisions in order that they are able to respect themselves and others to ensure they have the best chance in life.
As a result of the strong partnership work within the Respect Yourself Programme we aim to achieve:
- A reduction in the under-18 conception rate
- A reduction in the rate of sexually transmitted infections amongst young people
- Young people will be able to make informed choices about their sexual health and the impact of early parenthood
- Young parents will receive appropriate support to ensure positive outcomes for themselves and their children
The Respect Yourself Strategy has been developed and influenced by young people, parents, professionals and research on what works.
