Specialist health services

 

There is a range of specialist health services to support children and young people in Coventry. These are provided mainly by the Coventry Teaching Primary Care Trust (external website) and the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (external website). Some services are only available following a referral by a G.P or other health professional. More information is available from the external website and guidance notes highlighted below.  

Dental Health: To find a local dentist visit the NHSdirect website. You will also find details about dental care for babies and children on this site. The Community Dental Service provides specialist advice, support, prevention and treatment services for children and young people with special needs only. In addition there is guidance in this directory about emergency treatment (Word doc.42k). 

Immunisation Services: Local GPs can provide details about local services in your area. For more general information about immunisation and vaccinations visit the NHS immunisation website. 

Mental Health services: The (CAHMS) Coventry Adolescent and Children’s Mental Health Service is for young people who experience difficulties with their mental health. More information about support for mental health is available in the directory.
 
Nursing services are provided by the Mainstream School Nursing Service and the Community Nursing Team which includes Diana Nurses and Special School Nurses. 

The Patient advice and liaison service provides on-the-spot help and advice for patients, relatives and carers.

The Children's Community Physiotherapy team assess and treat children who have a range of difficulties with their mobility, strength, balance and co-ordination.

The Speech and Language Therapy Service provides assessment and interventions for children with speech, language, communication and feeding and swallowing difficulties. In addition the Speech and Language Support Service for schools provides educational support to students with diagnosed speech and language disorders. Sure Start Children's Centres have a role to support the development of speech and language and further details are available in practical guidance-section 9.     

Public Health and Protection services are provided by the Health Protection Agency. This is an independent body that plays a critical role in protecting people from infectious diseases and in preventing harm from hazards involving chemicals, poisons and radiation.
