There is a range of support and guidance for organisations (internal link) about general medical care issues and adminstering medicines for children and young people. Many individual establishments have their own policies and procedures based on this guidance.
Some children have particular medical conditions that require a specific type of support and medication. It is a general rule that training will be provided by the Mainstream School Nursing Service, the Community Nursing Team (external website) and other medically trained staff, for anyone who is expected to administer medication.
The following common medical conditions affect children of different ages and in all settings and more information is available from the NHS Direct Encyclopaedia (external website).
- Anaphylaxis
- Asthma
- Diabetes
- Epilepsy
Further information about these conditions and the related medical care issues is provided in the document Managing Medicines in Schools and Early Years (PDF 306k).
In addition guidance for administering Oxygen (Word doc 36k) and for Enteral feeding (Word doc 35k) has been developed by the Consultant Nurse for Coventry and Warwickshire.
More information about particular medical conditions and health issues is available from external links to websites of national organisations elsewhere in the directory.
