Health improvement

 

The National Service Framework for Children, Young People and Maternity Services is a government ten-year programme for improving children's health. It describes the responsibilities of different agencies and how they should work together to improve the health of children, young people and families. For example it sets out the contents of the Child Health Promotion Programme. Choosing Health:Making Healthier Choices Easier (2004) (external website) is the government White Paper that sets out the key principles for supporting the public to make more informed choices about their health. Chapter 3 Children and Young People - starting on the right path, describes planned support for children and young people, their parents, families and carers.

The City Council works with other organisations and local people to improve the health and well being of communities. Community Health Development Officers work in priority neighbourhoods and the Community Nutrition Service supports local communities on food and nutrition issues. 

The Coventry Teaching Primary Care Trust provides Health Promotion Services for issues such as sexual health and smoking cessation and provides resources and information for people who work with children.

The National Healthy Schools Programme (external website) provides practical guidance for schools to create an enjoyable, safe productive learning environment and minimise potential health risks. The Coventry Healthy Schools Programme (Word doc 22k) delivers the national programme in Coventry. Schools are supported directly by a Healthy School Coordinator and consultants. 

The Healthy Care Programme (external website) has been developed by the National Children’s Bureau. It's aim is to improve the health and well-being of looked after children and young people in line with the Government's guidance Promoting the Health of Looked After Children 2002.

Children’s Centres also have a role for promoting public health in the community. This is described in section 10 of the practical guidance for Children's Centres (external website).

The Health Education Trust (external website) is a UK registered charity, promoting the development of health education for young people in the UK.
